A cultural centre in Sorrento since 1918

By resolution of 10th October 1918, the Museum’s Executive Committee decided that a library would be set up with the aim of collecting local history publications, editions of works and studies relating to Torquato Tasso, a well-known Sorrentine writer, poet and philosopher. On 10th March 1924, a library room was opened on the ground floor of the museum building, which is still active today.

The Library

Over the years, the library has also been enriched with a large collection of volumes, mostly from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries on the history of the Kingdom of Naples and the two Sicilies.

The library also has a large collection of texts relating to the Sorrento peninsula from the seventeenth century to today; a substantial collection of volumes on botany; a collection of texts on medicine, Italian and foreign literature and on seventeenth and nineteenth century art; various editions of classical texts and works in foreign languages; archaeological works relating to Campania; a collection of magazines and newspapers.

Many works, especially from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, are embellished with plates and engravings.

Historical notes

Worthy architects of the library’s establishment were mainly Silvio Salvatore Gargiulo (Saltovar), Manfredi Fasulo, Mariano Vervena, who also contributed to the development of the library with sums of money. In various ways, the Municipality of Sorrento, the National Library of Naples, the Circolo Sorrentino, the Congregation of the Servants of Mary and numerous private individuals have participated over the years to increase the collection of both books and manuscripts, as well as the donation of documents concerning noble families from Sorrento and prelates of the diocese which were added to the substantial archives, consisting initially of the Correale papers.
The texts can only be consulted by appointment. Library Manager: Prof. Mario Russo
