The Biscuit Collection

Biscuit is a special opaque mixture very similar to marble in appearance and colour.
Biscuits, also of oriental origin, first spread in France around 1750. The name derives from the fact that their production involves two firings (literally bis-cotto) at a temperature of around 1300°, without the presence of any covering glaze or colouring. The white, rough and porous surface obtained is of great elegance but restricts its use mainly to decorative objects: busts and small statuary derived from classical models, statuettes of pastoral and gallant groups, small ornaments; in Naples this type of porcelain constituted a splendid example of manufacture expressed by the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea. Here, thanks to the genius of important sculptors such as Filippo Tagliolini, production reached excellent levels of quality.
