Doccia Manufactory

The Doccia porcelain manufacture began when, in 1737, Marquis Carlo Ginori, a skilled chemist and inspired by his passion for White Gold, started a porcelain factory, attempting to reproduce the mixtures he had encountered on his travels in the Orient. The factory was born with the conviction that porcelain was a noble material not inferior to marble: the contribution of Viennese craftsmen and the use of Venetian kaolin, Tuscan earths and a very white imported kaolin called ‘Vienna earth’ were decisive for the success of the enterprise. The production was inspired by models linked to the figurative culture of the most significant works of the late Tuscan Baroque, but also involved the production of tableware, especially soup tureens, plates, snuff boxes and figurines depicting allegories, mythological and oriental figures, animals and figures taken from the Art Comedy.
